FOLLOW US IN THE CITY OF ANGELS - LOS ANGELES
Los Angeles, the city that we have long admired in film and television and which seemed so completely unattainable in our childhood. But in December 2018 we had the chance to see the City of Angels with our own eyes and to experience it with all our senses. After spending a few days in Las Vegas, ans then it was time for our next stop: LA and we had an incredibly exciting and exciting week there. In this post, we give you the ultimate "7-day LA plan" in the hand and above all give you one or the other insider tip. Have fun while reading. :)
To be honest, we just barely know where to start, as there are so many incredible things to do in the city of the beautiful and the rich, but let's just start from the beginning! :)
ARRIVAL AND ACCOMMODATION
Since we were already in the US and have traveled from Las Vegas to Los Angeles, unfortunately we can not give you exact information about flights from Germany. However, we researched a little and found that you can fly from all major airports in Germany with a maximum of one stop from about 400, - € per person to LA.
As we said, we arrived from Las Vegas and from there there are three ways to travel to Los Angeles. Either you drive yourself about 4.5 hours (270 miles) or you fly about 45 minutes.
Ok, those were just two options ... Get ready for option # 3, our absolutely crazy insider tip: why not just fly Private Jet ?! At first, that may sound completely crazy and priceless, but in the US, that is actually completely different than you think. There is an app called JetSmarter. You can book your flight with a private jet for really little money. Tayler has always had this dream of flying with a private jet and we met him in Las Vegas. Our flight from Vegas to Los Angeles cost $ 250 (regular scheduled flights start at $ 150). JetSmarter is basically worldwide, but the flights are actually so cheap only in the US. It was definitely a very cool experience. You should arrive at the exclusive JetSmarter building near the airport at least 15 minutes before departure to check in. Then you are taken with the other 10-20 passengers with a bus directly to the private jet and off you go. Already it says: Ready for take off.
Regarding the accommodation we can only recommend you to search for an AirBnB apartment. In Los Angeles there are really countless beautiful AirBnB's for relatively little money (at least compared to most hotels). We stayed in this type of accommodation except for the last night and were absolutely happy with it.
The first 6 nights we spent in an apartment in West Hollywood, very close to the Hollywood Hills. Definitely a very good location, because the prices there are not too expensive and most hotspots can be reached in a maximum of 20 minutes. The 7th night we got a AirBnB very close to Santa Monica with a direct view of the sea. In addition to the beautiful apartment and the great view, David, the host made this stay absolutely special. He has done everything to make us feel well, we are supplied with everything and even offered his scooters for a jaunt along the coast.
The next 2 nights we went to the Joshua Tree National Park, but we will tell you about it in an extra blog post.
BEST TRAVEL TIME
The best travel time according to various climate tables in the internet is between April and October, since the temperatures during the day are about 28 degrees Celsius. We went there in December because we just wanted to connect it to our Vegas trip and we definitely can not complain. The temperatures were just under 24 degrees Celsius at the top. Although it was very fresh without sun and after sunset, but we still had good weather. The number of rainy days is anyway very low every month.
Basically, you can move in LA, as almost anywhere in the US, very well with UBER. However, if you have such a packed and action packed week like us, we can only recommend you rent a car. Los Angeles is very spacious and the different hotspots and especially the places that we recommend in this post are not exactly close to each other. Accordingly, having your own car and being mobile and flexible at all times is the most convenient thing. We rented our car through TURO, the American AirBnB for cars. Through this app you will find a wide range of different cars that are rented by private individuals.
After comparing prices for a long time, we found by far the best price there, rented the car and were able to pick it up an hour later.
We chose a white Jeep Wrangler because it was great for our Instagram photos and because we also had a national park on the plan for which we wanted to equip ourselves well.
YOUR ULTIMATE LA PLAN
Surely you know all the Instagram photos in front of the colorful walls with angel wings, crazy graffiti etc. These walls can be found along Melrose Avenue, probably the hippest street in Los Angeles. She's definitely the main spot for the perfect Instagram photo. In addition to the colorful walls you will find many non-label shops and second-hand shops where you can shop very well. There is also a cool cafe and restaurant next to the other. Especially veggies and vegans feel very well there.
HOLLYWOOD WALK OF FAME:
Although this is one of the most tourist spots, you should still see the stars of all the legends and celebrities. And if you want to buy one or the other LA souvenir you are definitely at the right place. But be prepared for a lot of people.
SANTA MONICA PIER:
The Santa Monica Pier is one of the most famous attractions and landmark of the city of Santa Monica. In the middle of the jetty on Santa Monica State Beach is the Pacific Park, a small amusement park with ferris wheel, rollercoaster, carousel and other rides. Photo booth and cotton candy are there logically also found.
Our recommendation: rent a bike at the Santa Monica Beach State and cycle from there to Venice or Venice Beach. When the weather is nice, it's really a lot of fun because there's an extra bike track that takes you straight to Venice Beach. There you will not only find a very nice beach, with these little colorful houses of the Life Guards and many surfers, but also a skate park, souvenir shops and a lot of hip cafés, restaurants, bars and small boutiques, or clothes shops. We would almost say: THE PLACE TO BE!
WINDSOR BOULEVARD / 6TH STREET:
You may have never heard of this street before, and basically it's just a common neighborhood in LA. However, if you turn in the right direction, your gaze will quickly pass from lined up palms to the Hollywood sign. We searched for this road for a long time and finally found it. Definitely a super cool spot for a new Instagram photo.
LACMA - LOS ANGELES COUNTY MUSEUM OF ART:
Anyone interested in art is here at the perfect place. This museum offers an art collection with nearly 130,000 works of art from antiquity to the present day. However, we were much more interested in the lanterns in front of the museum, which you probably know from film and television. Here is another very cool Instagram photo guaranteed. TIP: It is best to arrive very late in the evening to avoid crowds.
Malibu is a city about 45 minutes west of Los Angeles, known for its beaches and an absolute surfers paradise. We spent one day there and it is really gorgeous !!
First, we visited POINT DUME, a collection of sand dunes and a cliff dropping to the sea. Get ready for incredible views of the ocean, beautiful beaches and plenty of sea life. If you're brave, you can even climb down to the very deserted and hidden Pirates Cove Beach, but watch out for ebb and flow!
Farther west of Point Dume is ZUMA BEACH, a huge beach famous for its waves and the place to go for countless surfers.
Lunch stop was at Kristy's Malibu, a cult café in the middle of Malibu. They offer also super delicious hot food and delicious Açai bowls.
At sunset, we finally drove to the EL MATADOR BEACH, a beautiful beach, at the foot of a cliff, which we can strongly recommend. You have to park above the beach and then reach the beach via some stairs.
We spent a wonderful day in Malibu and can only recommend a day trip there. However, at this point we must also emphasize that our thoughts are entirely with the victims of the fire catastrophe. We visited the city only a short time after this tragedy and we could hardly believe our eyes. In addition to the beautiful side, we have also seen the terrible consequences of the fire, which has shaken us deeply. We can only hope that nature will recover there quickly and the people who have lost everything quickly find a new home.
The city of Laguna Beach State is located between Los Angeles and San Diego, about one hour from LA and is definitely worth a visit. Again, there are beautiful beaches to find. During the day you should definitely visit the 1000 Steps Beach, an incredibly great, very quiet beach, which at first glance looks quite "normal". However, climbing right over the rocks leads to a secluded beach section with a natural pool that fills up at high tide. However, be careful and research the tides first, because if the water is very high, it can be very dangerous to climb to the other side. Please be careful and treat yourself to this beautiful place only if the water is already back.
We’ve watched the sunset at another great beach in Laguna Beach - Treasure Island Beach. As you can see you should not forget your bathing clothes, because on beautiful beaches California is definitely not lacking. And the sunsets are not bad there! :)
The first evening we visited Angels Point, a previously less well-known lookout with an incredible view over the city. At sunset, this place is an absolute highlight! Ride early enough to find the swing at the top of the hill before sunset. For this, you have to drive through Angels Point Road almost completely, past the baseball field until you see parking on the left side of the road. Turn off your car there and walk up the hill until you get to the swing, the view from up there is absolutely breathtaking!
Then we watched the sunset from the actually Angels Point! Only a few people were there and you could see the sun disappearing behind the city, a unique moment. :)
Let's come to our two absolute highlights! One of them is the hike to the Hollywood sign. Phew, I'll be (emotionally) emotional again if I just think about it! When we got up there, stood behind the famous sign and could enjoy an incredible view of the entire city, we felt like in the movie. As mentioned at the beginning, this city was always totally out of reach for me as a child and suddenly we are up there and can see all this with our own eyes! A moment of gratitude and happiness! But enough of overwhelming emotional outbursts. Of course we want to explain exactly how you too can enjoy this view. All roads lead to Rome and so to the Hollywood Sign. There are really many hiking trails up, but most do not take you directly to the very top of the trail.
The best way to start, as shown in the screenshots, is at the corner of Deronda Dr./Mullholland Hwy. You have to be careful when parking your car. Since this is a housing development with very narrow streets, the police are often on the road there and like to distribute traffic tickets or even tow your car. So, depending on what you do, you better be careful and park further down at one of the main roads and then walk all the way up, which will at least double your run time. Nevertheless, we recommend that you follow the route marked in the screenshot, as its leads you directly to the most beautiful point - behind the Hollywood sign. Once at the top, it simply means: STUNNING!
It's best to walk up in the late afternoon so you can watch the sunset from there! For the way back you should have your cell phone flashlight ready as the path is really pitch dark.
One more thing: if you are up there, please think of us, because that was really a highlight for us! :)
Last but not least, a helicopter tour over Los Angeles ... but without doors! Three times you can guess from whom this idea came - of course from Anika! : D A really exciting and also unforgettable experience, because that was a helicopter flight in a class of its own! Looking at LA from above, while your feet dangle in the air and the wind blew your hair! The provider OrbicAir has made this tour possible for us. We flew the entire city for a full hour, including Hollywood and Hollywood Sign, Downtown LA, Venice Beach, Santa Monica Pier and Beverly Hills. So if you still have a little time and the small change we can only recommend such a tour, because a helicopter tour of this kind is something very special.
JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK:
Since we saw a lot of great photos of Joshua Tree on Instagram before our trip, we did not miss the opportunity to make a detour to the National Park. All information can be found in a separate blog post.
All in all, we had a wonderful week in Los Angeles. The only thing we noticed really negative is the high rate of homeless people, which we unfortunately did not feel too safe in some areas. Otherwise, the time has fallen there incredibly well.
As you can see, there are so many things to see, do, and experience that you really do not get bored there.
We wish you a wonderful time there and are looking forward to hearing how your stay was!
